March Monthly Goal Meetup

02 Mar

February surprised me in a lot of ways. When I wrote my goals for February I thought that I had it all planned out. But then mid-month some new opportunities arose, events popped up, connections were made, priorities changed.

I know that’s all very vague, but my point is that if you can’t go with the flow, you might just miss out on some really great stuff. For example, you might notice that I have a brand new Wordpress website with my own domain! When my aunt offered (read: really pressured me) to host the new site for me and help with the technical side of things, I couldn’t pass it up the opportunity to learn the Wordpress platform and get a little more serious about everything. So before I get into March let’s check out last month:

  1. Do my taxes! I even got my refund back already. Onwards and upwards!
  2. Arrange my first tweetup in the Raleigh-Durham area. An example of something that I would have worked on had some unforeseen more immediate events come up. Instead of working on our own tweetup, Brianne and I have been working with the Pecha Kucha Night event organizers to help out doing PR, spreading the word to get more speakers, and helping out the day of the event. It’ll be a meetup, even if not a tweetup. We both agreed to postpone the tweetup until after all the March events are over.
  3. Up the blog frequency. This was so much easier than I thought it would be. Easier as in… I wanted to do it, so I did it. Not easier as it didn’t take a lot of work, because let me tell you — it takes a lot of work. So much fun, so exciting though! It’s as if there was a piece of me that was missing all this time.
  4. Take on a part-time job. I did a lot of looking and made notes & bookmarks, but I realized that I really need to re-write my resume first. I needed to break up the big goal into smaller goals.
  5. Keep having fun. I didn’t end up doing everything I thought I would do, but there were some exciting things going on last month. Most notably my mom had her first art show in over 5 years. I am so proud of her we had a fantastic night celebrating after the opening!

Reflecting on last month, I’m hesitant to make any predictions for March. What I do know about this month is that it’s packed full of events, traveling, networking, and birthdays! What do I want to get out of it all then?

  1. Finish perfecting the killer resume. I started this in February when I realized it needed a complete re-haul. I’m even considering hiring a resume writer to help out. Personal recommendations?
  2. Finish the new blog redesign. You all reading this are among the first to see it live, so tell me what you think. Feedback is ever-so-appreciated!
  3. Don’t be shy. By this I mean get out of my comfort zone, talk to people I haven’t talked to before, and make some meaningful connections. There are 4 big idea sharing events that I’m going to this month (3 this week and 1 the last week of March) where there will undoubtedly be hundreds of people eager to have interesting conversation and I CAN’T wait. So excited. Not only that, but my sister and I are going to NYC March 10th – 14th. While we don’t have a plan yet, I will be happy as long as I come home thinking it was worth my time. I really hope to catch up with some old friends but also meet some new people that I’ve met online. So really, help me with this one, and if you’re in the NYC area please let me know so we can get together!

To participate in the meet-up:
1. Post a list of your career/life related goals for March, along with your checked off February goals if you’d like, on your own blog.
2. Go back to Brazen Careerist and leave a link to your post (*If you don’t have your own blog, feel free to share your list in the comments to join in!)
3. Then, check out everyone else’s lists as they leave comments - click their links, visit their blogs, say hello, meet, greet and support each other because that’s what it’s all about!

  • Hi...I'm new to your blog. Found at Demetra Allen's.

I love the idea of doing monthly goals and having people encourage you to get them done. I really need to begin making that a habit of mine so I can be more focused. I know that month is halfway done, but good luck with all of your goals!

  • Hey, I love your site. Perfecting the killer resume, is a goal I am sure many of us should be taking on right now. I have found developing a great resume is a continuous process. I am sure your's will be where you want it to be in no time.

    Good Luck!!!

  • I've also been thinking I need to scoot my blog over to Wordpress. Yours looks fantastic- definitely a nudge for me to follow suit. Stay tuned!

Re: Goal 1- Brazen has a 'resume feedback' group. I did a serious redesign of mine a few weeks ago and got some fantastic feedback from its members.

Re: Goal 3- this helps me- Just think that once you get over the small 'shyness' hump, you will be SOOO happy you did. I know that nothing makes me happier than meeting and hanging out with cool new people; I bask in the afterglow for a few hours afterward. Totally worth pushing that shyness aside.

    Good luck!
  • Yea the move from blogger to Wordpress was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Now I've already offered to help a few people make the transfer, too!

Thanks for reminding me about the Resume Feedback group -- I'm not monitoring it yet and so I forgot about it! I'll have to check that out.
  • I love the look! Really nice blog. And I have noticed your blog frequency went up quite a bit. Might be the same effect as when you use an agenda more often as soon as you have a really appealing one. Get going ;)
  • Haha great analogy! It almost feels like I'm writing into a leather-bound journal... :)
  • Thanks Mike! I guess for the resume I was actually considering paying someone I trust to work on it with me. All of the big resume writer companies don't really give you any examples that they've done and I don't want to pay big money not knowing what to expect. So I guess I'm looking for a referral. Anyways, thanks for the tips!
  • I know that more PAINTING is in your future ;) If February taught me anything, it's that we don't always know "what's next"!
  • Cyn
Carlee, well done! Aunties do have a way of moving folks, especially when they have a great cause, like helping you become the best you can be. Pus she is full of great techie knowledge. I, personally and professionally, couldn't live with out her (www.foleyo.com). I was so surprised to see my bird paintings up on your blog. Thanks! These two fellas were fun to do! Sounds like your first quarter is coming along nicely, NYC will be great in so many ways, you'll see. Can't wait to hear the stories. I also appreciate you and Brianne's help with PKN PR... what's next I wonder?
  • Great goals! And congrats on the February successes.

For resume writing, there are a lot of good groups on LinkedIn that could help you out, along with a lot of good blogs that can give you tips on interviewing and stuff like that, too.

The blog design looks real nice already, keep it going!

And shyness is a problem of mine as well. I'm trying to get better in lots of different ways, like posting more online, and reconnecting with old friends on facebook. It's surprising how many old friends will excitedly talk to you online, so don't be afraid to say hello to that old roommate you haven't talked to in 5 years. So far, all of my old friends have been very receptive. No one has angrily said "Where have you been?!" or anything like that.

    Good luck!

    - Mike
  • The design is beautiful. Very leather-bound-journal-on-a-desk.

Glad we agreed to hold-off on the tweet-up/meet-up for a bit. March is going to be a bear and April is going to kick my butt too but we'll make it happen.

Seems like the more I'm trying to cut out and focus down, the more busy I'm becoming. So that's one of my goals for March - keep cutting out what I do not want to do to be able to focus on what I truly want to do even if it pisses people off.
  • You're right, you gotta do what you gotta do. And you won't piss us off if you don't join in our monthly goal meet-up circle. We're here to keep each other accountable. So like I said before, as long as someone is keeping you accountable you'll be just fine (even if that person is you). Nobody should be telling you what your priorities are other than yourself. Good luck to both of us for this crazy month of March!
  • Congrats on your self-hosting! it is definitely a big step, and one that really made me more excited to post more frequently. Those are great goals - and especially the shy one. I think I need to add that one in for me next month...
    Best of luck in March!
  • Glad I'm not alone in the whole trying not to be shy thing... and if I can inspire someone else's goals then all the better! I'm really hoping you're right about being more excited to post now that I'm self-hosted. So far it's pretty exciting and I'm getting deep into it.
  • Love the new look! I like the stitching (if that's what it's called). Your mom's painting is beautiful, I love seeing people's artistic bug. Good luck on the resume, it looks like that's something a lot of us want to work on. I know for me, it's just like any part of my portfolio, and we need to keep those things up to date. If you don't probably not fun trying to remember all the awesomeness you accomplished in years past...
  • Yep, the stitching is what sold me, hehe. And seriously, resumes are in constant evolution it seems like. Even at work we have professional internal resumes to attach to proposals and they're ALWAYS asking us to update our resumes. I've actually gotten in the habit of writing down my [work] accomplishments of the past month on the 1st Tuesday of every month. I even have a reminder alarm set up (see, we're both alert nerds)!
