Learning from the Press: both sides of the story

I have this unique (or so I think it’s unique) perspective in dealing with the press for the first time as an event organizer because actually, at times I actually am the press. Not for the same purpose, though. I don’t get so entangled that I actually report on my own events. Yes I do blog about my events but really who actually reads this? My blog certainly isn’t mainstream media so it doesn’t count.

I digress. So about the same time that PechaKucha Raleigh . . . → Read More: Learning from the Press: both sides of the story

PechaKucha at ideaSPARK: Behind The Scenes

PechaKucha Night at ideaSPARK on September 16th, 2010 was by far the biggest and most seamless PKN to date. With 14 presenters—out of about 26

Me and Alex Gibson (our emcee) at the PKN after-party celebrating 1 year in Raleigh

submissions—and a packed room of about 200 attendees (out of the over 300 that registered), the fact that it’s popularity had seemed to doubled overnight was sort of obvious.

While I expected the PK night during SPARKcon to be a more popular event, I was completely unprepared for what actually happened. I predicted that recruiting speakers would be . . . → Read More: PechaKucha at ideaSPARK: Behind The Scenes

Forays Into Multimedia (And Ensuing Frustration)

Two months ago I got an email from Ryan Paugh of Brazen Careerist asking me & some other fellow rockstar “Brazenites” (as you’ll see I coined) to share the #1 thing we’ve learned about career success in a 30 second video. As flattered as I was to be solicited to give career advice, which may have actually been a first, I pretty much blew off the entire idea of it as soon as reading the email because:

a) What on earth would I have to contribute that someone else wouldn’t already say?

b) There’s really a million things to . . . → Read More: Forays Into Multimedia (And Ensuing Frustration)

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Perhaps you’ve noticed the drastic change in the “look” of my website. I was having some technical issues with my former theme and took the opportunity to update to a more professional and personalized layout and design. At first the bare bones Atahualpa theme wasn’t too impressive. My family and friends told me they pretty much hated the new design unless I could change a lot of the features.

Luckily I have some of the most awesome and talented family members to help me with just that. They’ve seriously helped me out a lot at my beck and call. . . . → Read More: Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Brazen Careerist Meetup

On Wednesday, September 22, we’ll be hosting our 2nd Meetup Everywhere event where groups all over the world rally together to answer life’s hard-hitting questions. Together. Then later, bring what they discovered back online to share with the community at large.

This month’s question is:

What makes your city a great place to live and work?

Meet up with local Brazen members and discuss what brought you to your city in the first place. Why is it so great? Why is it not so great? With enough support, what could you change?

Film each other talking about what you discovered . . . → Read More: Brazen Careerist Meetup

HASO (Help A Sister Out)!

And by that I mean literally, my fresh-out-of-college unemployed little sister, Rianna. She’s probably the

best person that I know, and I’m probably the best sister that anyone could have. Which is why I’m dedicating an entire post to her today.

I’m not sure exactly when she decided she had to move to New York City after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with an Anthropology degree this past May, but I’m pretty sure her mind was made up when we visited the city during her Spring Break back in March. While I was walking around complaining about my blisters, . . . → Read More: HASO (Help A Sister Out)!
